Perceptions of Cerebral Palsy in the Australian Community

Cerebral palsy is a leading cause of physical impairment worldwide. Community support and acceptance influence the opportunities people with cerebral have to participate in all areas life, but very little known about general community’s understanding palsy. This study investigated knowledge perceptions Australian community. A sample 1,217 adults responded an open-ended question: ‘What first thing that comes mind when you think palsy?’ Almost half indicated some awareness disability involving difficulties muscle control, movement coordination; however, 20% participants had no or stated incorrect facts. Wheelchairs were came for 10% sample. Few mentioned common comorbidities such as cognitive communication difficulties. substantial minority responses (8%) characterised by stigma insensitivity. Although many community appear accurate palsy, misperceptions stereotypes are likely impact on quality life personal well-being individuals their families.
